La Crema Pinot Noir 2008

La Crema Pinot Noir-2008

Turning 30 is a tough bite to chew. A girl needs her friends. A girls needs a long weekend away to embrace it all. A girl needs a good bottle of wine. All of these things were obtained this weekend and while the stories are fun, the wine review is really what you are here for…right?

In choosing which bottle we would go with as we sat at the outdoor beach bar, we wanted a fun name- something that resonated with having a milestone birthday. Nothing on the menu was called “In Shock” or “How am I 30 when I feel 22?” so we went with something symbolic instead and chose La Crema Pinot Noir 2008. Translating to “the cream” this choice was based on my being with the best friends in the world and having a weekend of all the finer things in life.

Everything about this bottle of wine lived up to our expectations. Rich enough yet fruity enough, this Pinot Noir went well with the Mahi Mahi burger I chose for lunch. It also coupled well with the chocolate cheesecake the sweet waiter brought over for my birthday dessert. Fans of cherry will love the hint it leaves on the tongue.

Purchased from the restaurant for $34, La Crema will typically run you about $17-$25 if purchased at a retail store. Worth every penny, the wine is as simple yet classy as its label and made this birthday girl feel like a sophisticated 30-something.

Smoking Loon Pinot Noir 2008

Smoking Loon Pinot Noir 2008

Just as “Girl’s Night Out” is a rare treat so is finding a delicious Pinot Noir at a great price. Upon sitting down to indulge in way too much food, gossip and laughter, I knew I had to choose wisely. Nothing that would give me a headache in the morning and something that wouldn’t break the bank. I opted for Smoking Loon Pinot Noir 2008 and was definitely impressed.

While it was not as smoky as other Pinots, it did taste better the longer the bottle sat and the warmer the wine became. Upon the second, or third, glass (sometimes a girl loses count), the Smoking Loon became smoother and had really reached its full flavor potential.

With hints of cherry, this California red was just as enjoyable as the company I was surrounded by. A great choice for someone seeking a lighter red, the Smoking Loon Pinot Noir is an appropriate long night of girl talk kind of wine. I paired this wine choice with goat cheese and tomato bisque dip and the duo could not have been more spot on. In fact, this dynamic duo was the most coveted thing at the table. I would recommend this Pinot be paired with flavorful foods such as strong cheeses, such as goat or gorgonzola, and fish.

Restaurants may charge upwards of $23 a bottle for this Pinot Noir, often times more depending on the year. It can be purchased at retailers throughout the nation for about $10 and would make a great table wine for a casual night in.
